SMC NICs Rock for Less

I recently went through a major hardware upgrade on my LAN at home. I networked every computer I had, and built 2 additional computers to act as servers and routers while I train for some certification tests.

I run a mix of operating systems: RedHat Linux 5.2 and 6.0, FreeBSD 3.x/4.x, Win95/98/NT/2000, and BeOS.

I had to buy a number of network cards that would work on as many platforms as possible, and were inexpensive, since I had to buy a bunch. Paying upwards of $50 or $75 a card for 3Com or Intel was not an option. I researched Linksys, D-Tek, and SMC.

I finally chose SMC cards, and managed to find them at CompUSA for $14 each, 10/100 auto, TX, complete with a 5-foot Cat 5 patch cable in every box.

They are working great. I have them in my FreeBSD and Linux machines, as well as the Windows machines. I wasn't able to get them to work on the BeOS machine, but I had an Intel card laying around from an old install project and used that for the Be box.

I would highly recommend checking out the SMC 10/100 cards. I have seen them online for about $12-$14, but then there is shipping. I'm not sure if CompUSA has raised their prices on these cards, but I found mine at CompUSA for $14 without any shipping.
