The truth about Dot Pitch

May 11 '00

The only way to compare apples to apples is to compare the horizontal dot pitch of a shadow mask monitor to an aperture grill monitor.

Aperture grill monitors use vertical stripes of phosphor coated on the inside of the faceplate, separated by thin wires that act as the shadow mask. This creates columns of phosphor. Thus the only way to measure aperture pitch is horizontally.

Historically shadow mask monitors where measured diagonally, before AG monitor technology was invented.

Shadow mask monitors use a thin piece of metal filled with tiny holes that acts as a shadow mask. The holes are staggered, however the phosphor dots on the screen line up vertically just like an AG monitor. Since the phosphor dots line up in columns like an AG monitor, it is possible and accurate to measure the horizontal distance from one column to the next just like you would an AG. Put up a white pattern and look at any shadow mask monitor with a small magnifying glass or jewelers loop, 5x power is all you need. You will clearly see the red, green and blue phosphor dots lined up in neat columns, just like an AG monitor.
