If you've ever done a search for baby furniture and come up with GIRLS!!GIRLS!!SEXY-N-NAUGHTY web sites (AND you have children whom you'd rather not know of these things just yet--uh, the girls, not the baby furniture), then go with Cyber Sentinel.
Cyber Sentinel provides active filtering or passive monitoring with good customization features. My wife and I have it on active filter which blocks not only suggestive sites, but also suggestive chat content AND it prevents our children from even entering their mailing address or phone number ON or OFF line.
It is a very straightforward program which records for viewing, all instances which initiated a block (i.e., it takes a snapshot of the offending event).
The blocking is good for the most part except when someone calls up the family letterhead template or the like; the blocking screen appears and you have to enter the disabling password before being able to proceed. This feature is also activated when doing a backup as well. You just have to know when to deactivate it.
Since installing the program, teaching our children Web safety, and reviewing the captured screens for awhile, my wife and I are quite comfortable turning our children loose to explore the Web. But just like going out to explore the big, wide world, we aren't relying on technology to teach our children. We talk with them about safe traveling, parts of the "city" which aren't appropriate neighborhoods for children to be in, the proper way to talk with faceless strangers, and such.
With that approach, and Cyber Sentinel acting as a guard rail, we think our kids are on the right track.
