| shazzam90's Full Review: Abit BH6 |
I was actually really surprised to see a review of the Abit bh6 main board here on epinions still since it has been so long since its hay day. I was one of the people who bought and built a system based on the configuration that brought Abit into the mainstream, the Celeron 300a running at 450 along with the bh6 main board.
When this first came out it was great, jumper less bios for quick and easy CPU settings, fan and temperature monitoring so those tweakers out there could see everything going on in their systems, and all based on Intel's 440 bx chipset, pretty much one of the best designed chipsets of the time.
I myself am still running the same 450a/bh6 combo and it runs strong, the only problems that I have are IRQ assignment or lack thereof (party on 11) and dual NIC compatibility, along with shoddy USB ports. I run my system as a gateway using Win98se and good luck getting two Nic's to work in a bh6, I had to go the one internal, one USB route which led to the problem of the USB NIC drawing too much power and interfering with my sound, but I can live with that.
As for today’s market, if you find a bh6 used I might shy away, it is kind of like buying a used Camaro from a teenager, you know they have been beating on it, and for the price there are so many new and better Abit boards out there, but if you find a whole system based on a bh6 for sale and it is running "decently" then definitely consider it, they have a few good years left in them if treated right and support up to 700mhz processors now with the latest bios upgrade.
Abit made their name with this board in the mainstream community, and what they have to offer now far surpasses this retro board, I only buy Abit boards for the systems that I configure and have yet to have a major issue.
