About a month ago I had Comcast @home install my brand-new cable modem access. It's been a wild ride ever since. The speed and the accessibility makes @home pay for itself. I love just going on to my computer and surfing the web without spending fourty-five seconds to a whole minute waiting for my phone modem to handshake with the dial-up service. I mean, should it really take that long to simply connect to the service.
When the man came to install my cable line, he installed a fresh line from the pole outside for a great connection. By the time it was completely installed to my upstairs bedroom, he had been working for three hours. Also, I signed up for a special summer deal which is simply this: $26.95 ($19.95 a month + $7.00 a month cable modem rental) until January 2001. Then it skyrockets to $40.00. I will not be happy about that but I do not think I will ever dial-up in my life.
The speed is unbelievable. I did a bandwidth test and it clocked me at T1 speeds. Businesses pay tons of money to get that kind of speed, but not me! I have an excellent connection. Download rates usually hit 122.20 kbps with some hitting 200.00 KBPS. That's unheard of because before I would be happy to get over three!!!!
There was been two minor problems so far. The first one was while playing a multi-player game over the internet by cable modem jammed. I simply hit the power off and on button to reset the modem and then everything was fine. Then last week, my e-mail (I use Outlook Express 5.0) was down for about three hours on the weekend. Again, not a huge problem but it's annoying, especially if I was expecting a big important e-mail.
Go with the @home service for extraordinary service and production. I love it and I will never, ever disconnect this from my computer.
Needs for modem: 133 MHz +, 48 MB RAM, room for Ethernet card.
