This laptop stood out from all the others on the shelf. The two- tone lid was just different enough to make me take a closer look- and I liked what I saw.
All the gimmicks you'd expect in in a higher end laptop are there: DVD, decent sized display area, plenty of RAM and hard drive space. There was even a LAN connector right next to the modem on the back. Thin and light-
everything I was looking for.
Sure, there are other laptops on the market with the same (or similar) specs. This one just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I have no brand loyalty- my last laptop was a Gateway (hated the LS-120 drive) and my next one "was going to be" a Dell.
In use, the "joystick" mouse quickly proved irritating. Not that I've ever been a fan of touchpads. A Microsoft Intellimouse (no moving parts) makes a nice addition, via the USB ports. There is also a switch near the hinge, to detect when the laptop has been closed. On mine, this stick in the closed position, with the effect that the screen won't light up. Caused me a few minutes of grief. Just jiggle the switch loose and all is well.
I've yet to form a firm opinion on windows ME, which is bundled on the repair disk.
All up, I'd recommend this Toshiba to anyone who wants a decently equipped laptop, with just a touch of elegance in the styling.
