Pros: quick downloads; always "on"; doesn't tie up telephone
Cons: technicians
The Bottom Line: I enjoy being able to sit down at my computer. I do not miss bad connections or being kicked offline by AOL.

I have had my Cox.com service now for over a year. The connections are 99.9% reliable here in Eastern Nebraska. Cox is also my telephone provider as well as my cable television provider. For my Internet Service Provider service along with the cable, (2 out of the 3 services) the bill is $94.00 per month, which includes taxes. ISP service alone is about $44 plus taxes. You do not need to be a cable television subscriber in order to subscribe to Cox@home however you are given a small discount for subscribing to both services.
Before we had Cox my husband and I worked opposite shifts. I frequently spent the evenings on the computer, Internet style, and thus tied up the telephone in the process. We tried to get Call Waiting, but it didnt work properly and my husband STILL could not get through.
We ended up getting a second line, and even through our home was already wired for two telephone lines, by the time our previous telephone company, US West, got through raping us for the installation cost of connecting the second line, the bill was at least $150. US West was also kind enough to connect us with a neighbor 1/2 mile away for about 3 days on a party line (flawed connection) until they came back to connect it correctly. Two lines for $100 per month including taxes - I almost forgot, plus about $22 per month for AOL. The only extras I had was an unlisted telephone number and caller ID.
Coxs Cable Modem service has been the solution for us. Cable modems do not rely on traditional telephone lines for transmission, and thus my husband can call and reach me at any time. Downloads are a breeze. I measured my download speed at 277kbs this week. When I see files which state they can be downloaded in 30 minutes, it takes me a matter of seconds.
I am on the computer probably 2-3 hours per day - at LEAST! The connection is always on. I can sit down at my computer and start computing. I do not have to wait to dial up and possibly get rejected several times before I finally connect. No more GOOD BYE! in the middle of a webpage
My mail service is rarely disabled, but when it is, I can get around that by going to my other email account at ivillage.com where I can send and receive mail. The only problem is if I am expecting mail on my primary Internet Explorer mail account. I then alert whomever I am expecting mail from to contact me at the second mail address. When those pages are slow to load, others load quickly in the same time frame. Also, I can have several windows / websites open simultaneously, constantly bouncing between Ebay and my stock portfolio.
We purchased a package at a local mega furniture store, which gave us a discount on installation as well as an introduction to the service in November 1999. While the technicians who come to our home have left a bit to be desired, knowledge wise, the telephone support has generally been helpful, depending upon which technician you reach. Some go out of their way to help answer your questions/problems while others seem to go through the motions. When we have had to call technicians to our home, we have had service calls returned the next day or even within an hour or two. Our external modem died once, about 6 months after installation, which was replaced free. One time they did not come within the given two-hour time frame and we received a $20 credit on our next bill.
All told, we are VERY pleased with the cost, reliability, speed and convenience of Cox, not to mention always being able to call home.
I wish I was allowed to recommend it to more people at the bottom of the page. I would recommend it to 1)busy executives; 2)entertainment junkies; 3)hardcore gamers (assume they need quick connections and quick downloads) 4)sports fans (quickly track their favorite teams, full motion video); 5) trendsetters; 6) people who have it all.
