Pros:When working properly, internet access is extremely fast.
Cons:Crawls when it decides to be slow, which is MOST of the time.
"Lightning speed, that's on all the time"... NOT!
I have been using AT&T's @Home Cable modem service for several months now and I have to say that I'm VERY disappointed. When I first signed up, my internet access was very impressive. Then I tried putting it to the test by playing Quake 3 online, and noticed frequent lag. Download speeds varied greatly and I noticed a considerable amount of package loss during transfers and while web pages loaded. After a few weeks, I then noticed that my Internet access had slowed to a mere 40K connection! This was totally unacceptable! I called Tech Support and received meager support. After waiting for a long period of time, I finally spoke to a person who only told me to clear my browser's cache and history and to go to a quick loading page to test the connection. Of course it would load quickly since it was such a non-graphic intensive site! I tried calling again and only got transferred around until I was put on hold for well over half and hour! I've tried calling multiple times and have never received helpful assistance from any call. My friend who lives just down the street, however, does receive consistently quick access. I don't understand how the @Home product could vary so much in quality and speed.
Well, in conclusion, if you're one of the lucky ones blessed with a quick connection using AT&T's @Home service then you'll love this cable modem service. It is much quicker than a 56K modem in this case. Unfortunately, in my case it often crawled to speeds that were below those of 56K modems and tech support failed to resolve the problem. This service seems very inconsistent and until I absolutely cannot get DSL at the place I'm moving into, I won't be signing up with @Home in the future.
