| estoke61's Full Review: Iomega Zip 250 External SCSI Drive |
Zip it....zip it good!
There comes a time and a place where we are all in this familiar position: You need to transfer some huge files between computers. You're connection/network is too slow to direct copy. Or, you have no connection to the other target computer. What is the answer? Zip drives? Maybe, maybe not.
I was thrown into the said situation a year ago. I started looking for a zip drive. Since my needs were specific, by the time I found what I needed (scsi 100 mb insider), I found other, better ways to transfer what I needed.
Now don't get me wrong, Zip drives and disks are useful. Zip disks are relatively fast, and can now store 250 mb of space, which is significant for backup purposes or to store multimedia items. The drive that I tested was quick, due to its SCSI connection, which was further improved from the various ATA drives I have used.
The drive is convenient to carry around, and is definitely the way to go instead of internal (which isn't available anyway). Being a computer lab employee, I was happy to have the drive to make transfers, especially to computer that weren't networked with the others.
But perhaps networking is why I cannot recommend them anymore to everyone. I eventually put my trust in software that had solid networking and internet file sharing, thus effectively negating the need for such a drive in most cases. My workplace and participating departments now have made zip disks the norm. I don't agree. I have more faith in CD's than disks at this point.
Iomega's Zip tools help, but only to a certain extent. You cannot cross format disks both ways between the Macintosh and PC platforms, which is always a huge disadvantage. Yet, the disks and drive still do work well for the most part, as I have been using the same disks continuously resulting in some confidence regarding reliability.
Zip isn't for everyone. In fact, I think it is increasingly becoming useless to many potential buyers. If you have to have Zip, put some trust in Iomega. But if you need storage/backup any way you can get it, take a look around. You may find there are better prospects out there and more innovative products on the horizon.
