Mac is the Way to go...

OK, let me start by saying there is bias on both sides of the platform debate. I will point out that I have always owned PCs (I still have 2 Dell's) but now I also own an Apple Blue & White G3. I will try to be objective here, so you can make some decisions that are truly based on YOUR needs & means.
I still like my P.C.s. I still use them for gaming now & then, although I will probably end up buying a Playstation 2 for this once they are released in the US market.
It is true that some Mac users are fanatical. Once you start using these computers, you will have Windows/P.C users trying to tell you that "that is a kids computer, there is no software, they are too expensive, they are slow, & Macs are generally no good compared to P.Cs". Mac users tend to find these false statements offensive. I have bias now towards Macs but I DO use both platforms so feel I know what I am talking about. Did you know that the iMac is still the best selling personal computer & it has been for a while now. The ibook is the best selling personal laptop too! What does that tell you? A cult? A fad? Or maybe people are on to a good thing?
Let me address some of these points one by one.....
"MACS ARE NOT A REAL COMPUTER": What does a real computer mean? If it means that you have to try to work out what the heck is going on when you get an SYS error as you do a PC, then you can keep it! One thing I love about my Mac is it IS VERY stable. I do not get repeated crashes as I do with my P.C. If it does crash, I can nine times out of ten just quit out of the offending program & reload it. Usually it is an extension issue, which is very easy to track down & repair, even for a tech novice. Apple will be releasing a brand new (from the ground up) operating system sometime in the summer of 2000. This is called OSX as in Operating System Ten. OSX is Unix based, will feature protected memory, multi tasking & a lovely (looking from the screen shots) GUI (graphic user interface). This should really make the Mac even better than I feel it already is.
"THERE IS NO SOFTWARE AVAILABLE": I will be the first to admit that if you want a computer primarily for games, then the Mac will more than likely not cut it. There are games available, but no where near the amount that you will find for a P.C. This is improving however, as Apples market share has been gaining ground for the last 2 years, more & more sofware companies are jumping back on board, but it still lags behind the P.C in this area. Now, if we are honest with ourselves, most people want a computer for the internet, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, etc, etc. This is all available on the Mac. Microsoft has been supporting the Mac platform for a while now. You are able to Get Microsoft Office for the Mac, but I tend to prefer a program called Appleworks which although does not have all the "bells & whistles" is much easier to use day to day. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 is better on the Mac than the P.C as a number of magazines have stated. Lots of e-mail programs available too. The best way to find software is probably to go to Apples web site & do a search. At the end of this editorial I will give some links which may prove useful.
An awful amount of software which you see for the P.C also works on the Mac, but due to shelf space in stores, will be mixed in the P.C sections. Look on the side of the box & see if it works on the Mac as well as the P.C. There are literally thousands of software titles available for a Mac. So you see, software is not much of an issue.
"MACS ARE EXPENSIVE": Again, I admit that my G3 was more expensive than some P.Cs. The iMac however starts at under $1000. The G4s go for somewhere around $1500 upwards. iBooks (looks like a flattened iMac) go for around $1500 which is not bad at all for a laptop. Powerbooks which are the high end laptops go for about $2400 upwards. When you buy a car, would you buy a Acura or a Yugo? the Yugo would probably get you from A to B, but if you can afford it, you would probably get a nicer car. The Acura would hold its value better, is a nicer ride, more style, etc, etc. Macs are the same, you spend more but you get a better product.
"MACS ARE SLOW": You go into a computer store, you see a P.C that is say 800MHz & a Mac that is 400MHz. Let me tell you, it is not just about that number. Macs use a different kind of chip that although runs at a slower MHz, is in fact a lot faster than a P.C chip of the same speed. It is like comparing Apples to Oranges! A hunking V8 Chevy may be doing 100MPH but ticking along at 3000 RPM, whereas a 4 cylinder is only doing 90 MPH but the RPMs show it is screaming along at 5000RPM. Doesnt add up does it? Think of that V8 as the Mac..it may only be ticking over, but it is going faster than that 4 cylinder which is making all the noise!
There it is, I can honestly say that it is unlikely I will every buy a P.C again. My Mac is so user friendly, does not crash, has all the software I really need, I can share files with my P.C counter parts when needed, is blazingly fast, holds its value a lot better than my P.C, & seperates me from the sheep that do no research before they choose a computer. Think outside the box people. The Mac is not going away, it is gaining market share in a big way. More & more companies are starting to use Macs, along with schools & consumers. Get a Mac, you will not be disapointed!
