| mrstiggy's Full Review: ABS Supreme DVD System 1 |
After reviewing my Computer Shopper thoroughly, soliciting quotes in my area, and researching desktop systems online, I finally settled on ABS. Their website (http://www.buyabs.com/) allows you to choose a computer and configure it to your specifications, giving you an adjusted price when finished. The only complaint I would have about the website is that the components are not defined a little better - I had to do some research elsewhere to discover what the mouse I wanted looked like, as well as the software.
The computer I finally purchased, the Supreme DVD System 1 - modified to my standards, of course - arrived less than 2 weeks after I ordered it. It was well packaged and came with a nifty binder. Each computer component software and manuals came in it's own clear sleeve in the binder - case/board components, monitor information and CD, software, peripherals, etc. Clearly documented (although Front is listed as Font) and carefully arranged, the binder and it's contents are a great help. One caveat: one of the plastic sleeves, which has 3 holes punched in the side, was ripped.
I purchased MS 2000 Small Business Edition with my system, expecting it to have all of the same software as the MS2K SBE listed on Microsoft's website; it did not. ABS responded to my e-mail within 30 minutes and 30 minutes after that, I had an RMA number and was able to return the CD with no problems. Their customer service is outstanding.
My machine has run smoothly since the day I set it up. The monitor needed a little fine-tuning and I wish there was more documentation for the Altec Lansing speakers, but otherwise, I can't complain. Unlike other computers I've purchased, ABS didn't clutter my system with a bunch of nonsense programs that I'll never use, like AOL or cheesy shareware games. My system was fully loaded and all software was pre-installed.
All told, and including shipping, I purchased my system for $400 less than I found anywhere else. While I might have saved a few hundred more doing the build myself, ABS made it worth my while with excellent customer service, great software (includes the Corel OfficeSuite, a great package if you're not picky about names) and a smattering of freebies - like throwing Norton AV in for free! ABS is a great company with fantastic customer service.
