Intro...
I have been an avid Macintosh user for quite sometime now, probably about 7 or 8 years. Once I got my new computer that could finally handle mp3's, one word came right into my brain at warp speed : Napster. I had seen Napster at my friends house, helping all my friends listen to whatever they wanted whenever they wanted, and just making the mp3 search and download a LOT easier than those old FTP sites.
OK, So I was a little bummed out after I visited Napster's web page (http://www.napster.com), and it informed me that there was no Macintosh version available yet, but one would be coming along. Instead it suggested a program called Macster which I downloaded from their web site. (http://www.macster.com/download).
What is it?
Macster is a program that allows everyone who is connected to the Macster server to share all of their mp3 files.
For example...
I'm at home sitting at my computer on epinions.com, and I get a sudden urge to listen to 311's previously unreleased song "Gap". I don't have the song on my computer yet, but my friend 311bud does. So I sign on Macster and do a search for "311-Gap", and it then shows out of the hundreds of thousands of users, who has the song, what length the song is, and how fast their internet connection is.
One double click later, I am staring at the progress bar sliding across my screen, which tells me how much of the song has been transferred from 311bud's computer. I'm actually taking someone else's shared copy of the song.
Once this file is on my computer, it becomes fair game for everyone else who has a 2 o clock in the morning craving for 311, and they can then take a copy of the song from me, just like I took it from 311bud.
This is a very very easy way to get any song you want, whenever you want, WITHOUT paying for the CD. It's also a way to fill up hard drive space REALLY quicky. Each one of the mp3's that you are downloading take up about 3 MB of space.
Macster ITSELF
Macster, as a program, is great. It is, without a doubt an amazing carbon copy of Napster for Macintosh. It allows you to not only download mp3's, but to chat in all of Napsters chat rooms, as well as giving you the ability to browse the song library of other users that are online.
The only beef that I have with Macster, which isn't a horrible problem, is that it dosn't PLAY mp3's. That's OK, because there are a billion mp3 players for Mac, but it's the only one thing that really sets Macster aside from Napster.
Macster is INCREDIBLY stable. The version that I use runs flawlessly on my secondary computer (which is only a PowerPC @ 80mhz), and even more amazing on my G4. I have left the program on for days at a time, with lists of 20 or thirty songs, and it is no problem.
The only time that there is SOME sort of downloading problem is when one of the users either signs off, or cancels your request for their song. None of that is the actual programs fault.
Outro...
OK, get it while it's HOT, and get it while it's LEGAL! Napsters servers could be shut down in September of 2000, so if you want to get that one song you love or that album that you can never find in stores, download it now!
Macster is an amazingly well written Macintosh program. It dosnt require much memory, serves an amazing purpose, and is incredibly stable.
Rock on, people!
