ICQ is one of my favorite Internet Chat and messengers but I definetly
would not give ICQ the nod for best Internet communicator, I would give that to a different Communicator. That's not to say that ICQ does not have its high points, but at the same time, it Most definetly has its low points which I will get into now.
Okay, so your asking, what is ICQ's High Points?
#1. Relative Use of Ease - It is relatively easy to use, others such as MSN are extremely easy to use, but for the most part ICQ is easy for anyone and can be downright amazingly useful for the expert who truly knows how to get the most out of all the advanced features ICQ has which brings me to my next high point about ICQ.
#2. Advanced features - It has many useful features such as File Transfer ( I do quite a bit of this and it is quite useful to have such a tool espicially when you are on a T1 line) Other advanced features for ICQ include telephony ( Haven't used this all that much, but hey it's pretty cool and you can make FREE phone calls over the internet, DID I mention it was FREE, LOL! ?
It also has an answering service and many other features that make it quite useful for the advanced ICQ user that wants to get the most out of ICQ.
Now what are it's bad points?
#1. Size of ICQ - To me it is just too large of a program (not so much in memory when you consider I have a 45 Gig harddrive but more so in terms of CPU usage, because it has know to crash my system more than once in a blue moon while other ones such as MSN Messenger haven't given me a bad vibe at all.
#2. SPAM - Just like Email, even if you aren't on anyones list and maintain a private ICQ connection, somehow, someway, YOU WILL GET ICQ spammed, It's a FACT of life, and not too enjoyable one. Another Blow for ICQ.
So just what is ICQ useful for? Besides the obvious Instant Messenging, you can Phone for free, have an answering service, can transfer files between ICQ users and you can CHAT, so their is many useful applications for this product and best of all it's FREE.
My personal experience though is that it crashes my system and consumes too much of the CPU to make it a staple program for me to run on my personal computer.
So my final verdict, is if you want a good Instant Messenger with advanced features but enjoy getting spam on occasion go with ICQ, however if you want a Great Messenger without the hassles of ICQ, go with MSN Messenger.
