| Paragon930's Full Review: Expert Software Dream Interpreter |
*This opinion is a response to amykhar's opinion on the same program.
Dream Interpreter is not intended to psychoanalyze the user of the program by any means. If you have that expectation in mind when buying the software you are going to be disappointed.
When I purchased this program, well over a year ago, it struck me as very interesting because I have always been interested in finding out the meaning of my dreams, and also have always wanted an easy way to record my dreams for safe keeping. Dream Interpreter was a very easy answer to this.
As amykhar said, when you start the program you are asked to enter information into a profile for yourself. I did not find this to be any different from any other software title I have purchased in the past. They all start out by asking you to enter personal information into data fields before you start using the program.
Ok, so after the entry of your personal information, you are ready to get going. amykhar said how the software says it would be better to click on the linked word to look at the text before starting, I do not recall this to be mandatory, however.
When you enter a dream into the Dream Diary a good thing to remember is that phrasing in complete sentences is not necessary if you just want to get the meaning of the elements in your dream. Personally, I am very into writing so when I enter my dreams I tend to write them in story form, but if you would rather just jot in the specific details of the dream you can, making sure that you put in words for crucial elements of the dream (for example if you were falling in your dream you must remember to write the word "falling" into the text field of the diary).
After entering your dream you are ready to have it interpreted. Yes, as amykhar said, the way it interprets the dreams is just about the same way that you would interpret them if you had a book of dream symbols, but I believe Dream Interpreter makes it even easier for you by looking up the key symbols for you. I have always been a fan of anything that will complete a task for me.
Ok, so once you have a dream interpreted you just have to click on each different symbol that they have picked out of the text for you. When you click on the symbol the definition of what that element of your dream may have meant appears in a box below the word list.
As with any computer program, you cannot expect this program to work miracles. As many people know, all this program is doing is looking through the dream and then extracting any words from that dream that match up with words found in its built in database. So what does that have to do with you? Well, it means that, yes, every so often you will get a response that may not have anything to do with your dream at all. Take something I encountered for example: I made the mistake of starting out my dream entry with "I dreamed that..." and one of the responses that came up was "dream" and the explanation started "to have a dream within your dream..." Now, I did not have a dream in my dream, I was simply starting out my entry saying what I dreamed, but the computer did not know that. So, when you are typing in your entries, just get to the meat of it and do not add in many extras because it may foul up the interpretation.
Honestly, I enjoy this program more for the ability to record the dreams and keep them in a password protected diary. That element is much more valuable to me than the interpretations themselves. They are more like an added bonus. I always tried to keep a notebook by my bed to write my dreams down as soon as I woke up but I never remembered to do that. Whereas, my computer is always on and I almost always use it in the morning, so it was much more practical and easier to use the computer to record the dreams. You can even print all or one of your dreams if you so desire.
So, if you want a program that is going to psychoanalyze you, I recommend going to a psychiatrist, do not buy Dream Interpreter. On the other hand, if you are just looking for a program that will tell you meanings of basic dream elements, and also like to keep your dreams on record to read later, this program is perfect for you.
