Consideration for CDR Brands
Aug 30 '00
This opinion may not be exactly on topic, but I feel it is related and worth consideration when contemplating the purchase of a CDR or CDRW drive. Through my experience burning CDRs I have come to prefer some brands over others for reliability in burning a 'good' CD (one that doesn't skip).
This opinion again may only benefit those using my particular combination of CD Writer and CD burner software and my experience is in creating audio CDs in wav format which are to be compatible with any CD players. My CD Writer is a Sony (8x max) burner and the software I've used mostly to burn with is Adaptec Easy CD Creator.
I have created around 200 CDRs in the past few months using the above hardware/software and in the process have come to favor certain brands.
It may be of value to note that I've found that CPU speed has in my opinion conclusively been identified as a factor in successfully burning CDRs, the faster the CPU the better. The following conclusions were arrived at using a Pentium III 700Mhz CPU for comparison.
The three brands of CDRs available for sale in the most abundance in my area are Sony, Maxell and Memorex. Sony CDRs were priced the highest of the other two this was my initial reason for trying both Maxell (middle priced) and Memorex (the lowest priced) as well. Since my CD burner was a Sony as well as my home stereo CD player, I assumed that Sony CDRs were probably my best bet. This was proven incorrect when I burned my first coaster using a Sony CDR. I had already at this point used both Maxell and Memorex CDRs and hadn't had a coaster with a Maxell yet. Memorex proved to be a shot in the dark with at least a 10% failure rate. I have since burned a Maxell coaster, but overall I have found them to be by far the most reliable.
Proper calibration on the CDR drive and software is important as well and should always be re-run after any system changes of CD writer config changes. I always run the test after recalibrating as well. Taking into consideration the coasters created due to improper calibration, the above preferences still hold. Maxell is the definite winner and I'm loyal to the brand now, while Memorex has performed poorly and Sony in the middle although it is priced the highest and I was using Sony hardware to both record and play the CDRs.
