With the advent of faster and better chipsets with higher fill rates and larger texture mapping, I thought I'd step back and think about exactly what my Staples - bought Riva TNT2 3D has done for me - and let me tell you: I thank nVidia (the makers of the card) from the bottom of my heart.
Compatibility:
Give me compatibility any day over high fill rates, polygonal madness and color depth - compatibility, compatibility, compatibility. This card rules the world of compatibility. Yes, it does not run games that use the solely the Glide API (most games support TNT's API as well), but virtually everything under the sun runs on the TNT anyway. The installation was cake. The drivers were easy to find. And 3dlabs had an easy place to find the updated drivers (you know the newest drivers NEVER ship with the hardware).
This card gave relieved me of the one burden I always have with my hardware (I'm a software engineer) - time troubleshooting. THANK YOU NVIDIA.
Price:
It wasn't the cheapest (especially since I bought it from Staples. BUT (and that's a big but) it was CHEAP for the amount of time I would have had to spend fidgeting with any other video card. This was the fastest hardware for me to EVER install - and ran nicely.
Speed/Picture
Upgrading from an 8MB card (PCI) to 32MB (AGP) TNT2 was like trying to drink butter and then learning that milk exists. Everything was beautiful with TNT2. And finally I could use my 20 inch monitor to its full potential. Picture is great - speed is terrific. I never see lag due to video card speed.
Synopsis
This card rules. As one other reviewer said, "If I could, I'd make love to this card." I don't think this card has the appropriate input for that kind of use - but its output is exceptional by any standards!
