| epinionatorbob's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 A433LT |
As a builder (and upgrader) of my own and our work computers (Mac and PCs), I have learned much about the ins and outs of the industry. When you understand the complexities of computers and software, it is amazing that anything works at all! Because I work in a graphics intensive world, I upgraded my machine to 256MB RAM with a 10 GB hard drive, got the interchangeable Zip drive and DVD drive as well. The NIC PC card takes up one slot and the other slot I use to plug and unplug my flash memory card from my Nikon 990 (see my epinion on this outstanding camera). The 15" monitor ROCKS! While the draw back is the weight, I incorporate my Dell into my daily workout routine. Yes of course wimps might like a 'feather weight' lap top, but its size and configuration flexibility make it an efficient, well designed machine that has become my regular desktop machine.
To address the design, I have seen my laptop disassembled and am amazed at the access to every part of the computer. The CPU is liquid cooled so rarely will the internal fan ever come on. The hard drive is a standard 3 1/2" and can be easily removed and replaced. In short, Dell designed a complete package that service techs love! And while nobody like to hear about service requirements, hey it happens. Dell has replaced my power cord (without question) and NIC card the next working day (different days).
As far as the performance of the machine, it is stellar with a few glitches. I am currently having some difficulties getting the USB port to interface with some devices. The location of the power supply in proximity to the sound card yields some noise when attempting digital recordings and playbacks (remedied by using battery mode). I'll update this review when I find a fix for the former problem. Beyond these, this laptop is and does just what a computer should do; allow you to be extremely productive anywhere you are.
Whenever I go on a plane trip, I take several DVD movies to watch. With headphones, sitting in front of the 15 inch monitor is quite a thrilling experience for movie lovers. The DVD is a fun addition to this powerhouse. The screen is bright (except in direct sun) and does a great job.
For me, a proprietary machine forever locks you into the clutches of the company you buy it from. Most upgrades and changes must be supplied by the company of production, and while I really hate this, I am willing to accept this in a laptop. Why? Because space issues force special circumstances. However, that being the case, Dell, with it's Inspiron Series has balanced these issues very nicely. And since I must in some ways be married to the company who produces my laptop, I had better pick a reliable, long range, dependable company who believes it exists to serve its customers.
While this machine does have some problems, it has so many ways to interface with it (NIC, 2 PC slots, Zip, and floppy) that I can always find a way around some of its quirks. This computer is lavishly decadent with power, delivers delicious graphics and allows me to create dynamic extensions of personality around the world. You want my laptop? You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
