I'd like to say I know quite a bit about computers. And when it was time to get a new computer, I happily browsed Gateway and Dell and skimmed through computer magazine dreaming of my new system. My budget was pretty tight, about 700-800 for a full system. I planned to create a mini-network, so I needed something faster than my old computer, which would still be used. I went to Best Buy and unhappily walked past the expensive, speedy system, but one caught my eye.
A $500 stand-alone Micron PC. It has a lot for $600, 700 MHz Celeron, 64MB Ram, DVD-Rom Drive, 20 GB, and Windows Me. I thought this would be a very good computer to share with, plenty of space to store my work, music, and games. I sometimes forget about software installed, so a huge hard drive was very nice to install various software in. My parents used this computer mainly for investments and trading stocks, so a speedy processor with a good amount of RAM allowed for them to buy and sell with ease. I chose my computer for its low price and offering of the basics and then more. I secretly wanted a DVD drive, and I love watching movies, the Matrix is amazing on my system.
I had to create a network between my two systems, both computers need access to the Internet. We started out with a Ethernet card. Installed was simple, un-screw the case, unscrew the port card cover, plug in the card, screw in the screw, and put the case back on. I installed the drivers, but alas, Windows Me was rumored to be incompatible with some drivers. I returned the card and well, to shorten the story, I went through 4 cards until I found one that work, which was surprisingly the cheapest card I could find. I have yet to use any other accessories with this computer, other than a printer, which works fine, like any printer should.
I'm very happy with my computer, it works very, very well and rarely crashes. I was happy with the software included, Works Suite may not be the very best software, but I was worried that I couldn't afford Word 2000, which I was thinking about purchasing as a stand alone product. That makes it very easy to do my work. I'm not very big on high-graphic gaming, Unreal is my most hardware-demanding software. Most games look fairly well on my system, Pong: The Next Level and Centipede play well. While integrated parts make the $600 price tag possible, upgrades will be tough, because I long for a graphics accelerator card and a RAM upgrade. However, I'm quite satisfied with a low price tag and stable computer.
