When looking for computer components, I tend to be a bit pickier than the average person. My requirements are probably also a bit different from the average person as well.
I set out to find a good video card to use in my system. I wanted to have good 2d and 3d support, at least 16 MB and be supported on multiple platforms. This card works wonderfully.
I know there are other cards that are faster, other cards that are cheaper, and other cards that offer more features; however, how many other cards will allow me to play Unreal Tournament at 1280x1024 regardless of if I am running Win98 or Linux?
The Win98 support is very easy. The installation CD worked very well and was easy to use. I encountered no problems with the setup. With the setup of Unreal Tournament and DirectX7, my system was running very well. The graphics looked great and I was getting good frame rates with no choppiness that I noticed. I did not check for actual FPS though it looked good to me and that is what I care about.
When I loaded Linux, the X configuration required a bit more effort. First I had to download the X server, the setup utilities, and the glide support. Then I had to run through the installation procedures. Getting the 2d to works was painless for an intermediate user of Linux; however, getting 3d was a bit confusing at first. Just remember to setup your system with 16 bit color and only use 640x480 when running the tests. Once the tests work, change the settings to whatever your preferences are and everything should work fine.
I like this card so much, I have installed one in three of my machines at home.
