Approximately 3 years ago, my company's network manager decided to select one company to provide all of our desktop systems. He chose Dell. Picking one company made it easier for the network department to purchase and maintain our computers. Picking Dell made it easier still.
Since I started working here, I have had five Dell computers at my work desk, and two provided for my use at home. Out of all of those computers, I have had a problem with only one. the motherboard on a Dimension 233 decided that it did not like hard drives, and proceeded t o chew through two of them in a two week period. A capable Dell technician replaced the motherboard at my company's site, and the computer has worked like a charm ever since.
No matter what company you buy a computer from, there are going to be some systems that have hardware problems. What matters is how the company handles those problems. In my experiences at work, Dell has always been responsive and capable. However, I have to admit that my experiences are limited. We just don't have very many problems with our Dell machines.
My current Dell computer at work is a Dimension L433. It came equipped with a 12 Gig hard drive, 128 megabytes of RAM, a CDROM drive, and a SoundBlaster 64 sound card. In short, it has the typical features found on almost any computer designed for small business today. Because I use the computer for software development, and not graphics programming or gaming, I am not overly concerned with the hardware. All I ask of my hardware is that it performs reliably, and the Dell has done just that.
My primary concern for a computer is that it be easy for me to maintain and support. I have a tendency to change operating systems frequently, and I like the procedure to be as painless as possible. In this respect, Dell is a clear winner. When I reformat my Dell, I am able to quickly access all the latest drivers from the Dell web site. All I have to do is enter the "system service tag", a number found on the back of my computer, and I am in business. The web site tells me exactly what drivers I need to make my machine happy. In my mind, this is the greatest asset of buying a Dell. I can remember struggling with finding support information on the Packard Bell system, and Dell's support is a refreshing change.
All in all, I am extremely satisfied with Dell computers. The Dimension L433 is a solid workhorse that takes all the abuse that I dish out. My only complaint with the L433 is that it is so fast, that I can no longer read error messages from DOS batch files. They just fly by too fast. I had to resort to logging all errors to text files. This is a complaint that I am happy to have. Dell computers make me more productive because they are fast, reliable, and easy to support. I can't ask for anything more.
