I guess I have come around a full circle. I have been assembling my own PCs for 7-8 years now, with the best components. However, sometimes you just want to plug the machine in and start working, rather than chasing down bios updates, IRQ settings, device drivers from many different vendors.. install / re-install OSes, converting partitions, and have a zillion wires dangling around.. etc.
After noticing that I was spending too much time working on the PC(e.g. Linux geek); I was begining to see the simplicity iMacs offered. Alas, I wanted a PC and am very very impressed by Win2k. So what is the fastest and the most trouble free way to get a PC up and running?
Get a iPaq for 499,(I got 2!) You can easily share any peripherals. You are up and running with this thing, on your DSL, on the net with the press of a button, in about 15 minutes after you get it... it is incredible. While this is not yet my primary PC( I need my Voodoo card, sound cards, DVD, CD ROM, dual proc machine) but the the cost of this machine .... 499 with Win2k is cheaper than me spending a whole day getting a stupid card to work... just cannot get over the simplicity.
ok realistically you may have to get some more RAM(www.crucial.com); since I install everything downloaded of the net.. haven't even ordered the CDROM drive.. .
Right now, I am using these amazing machine, as demo web servers at my work place, and as a second computer at home.
I recommend this for any one who needs a computer, does not need hardcore gaming, or make old peripherals work with it. Get a new printer, they are really good and cheap. I am wondering why compaq is not selling this machine in retail.
