Mommy took the voodoo away..
Dec 28 '00
A year or two ago, my cousins and I were raging about which cardmaker was better: The NVIDIA or the 3DFX. "But...3DFX has some..weird looking guy on the cover...", "Oh yeah?..Well NVIDIA has an 'N' in the word, and my name has the letter N..". People would constantly see forums stuffed with the same 'on and on...'. Well finally people can be quiet because the big NVIDIA bought it's competitor: 3DFX. This allows them to take over designs/implementation, though 3DFX will continue to support their videocards (even though I tried to update my drivers..and it was down the entire day..).
Quantum3D will be the sugar daddy who decides if they would like to release their version of the Voodoo 5 6000 AGP card, since 3DFX sold them the chipset plans and rights. I can't believe when I first heard about the V5 6000, I was wetting myself while reading the specs. Now I can go in the closet and cry...*sniff*. Anyways I'll just wait for the 'fabled' NV20 from Nvidia, thats supposed to come out soon.
When I had the choice between the Voodoo3 3000 and the NVIDIA line of cards back then, I chose 3DFX, because I was sucked in by the 'hype'. The speed was fast for it's time, and I was happy. Though then came the "32-bit naggers". I grew gloomy and sad, then I grew happy again, then yet again..Sad. I wanted to experience new horizons, be where no man has gone before! No not Pluto.. I wanted to experience 32 bit color!
Now I read the forums, and 32-bit color isn't as big of an issue as it was. I read of Lighting, Texture Compression, FSAA, and plenty more neat stuff. *drool* I am a huge technogeek!
I would love to just buy that Nvidia Geforce 2 Ultra, if it weren't for my 'other side'. The small side of me that nags to me at night and says: "It's too expensive.. C'mon think of all the cheese burgers and movies you could go see.. Think about the concerts and skiing trips! Think about when the NV20 chipset is coming out..". Then I shed a tear in my sleep... Though I think I'll be getting one soon in like a day or two because people talk about it too much and I really have to see what this baby can do, and when NV20 comes out, I'll just buy that, and give the old ULTRA to my other computer. Deal!
Did you see how fast I forgot about the Voodoo5 6000? Pretty fast eh? I think that both companies (3DFX and NVIDIA) come out with great drivers at a good speed. They both give dependable/great products and their advantages/disadvantages have to be looked at by both angles. One person would say: "In my flight sim games the Voodoo 5 5500 AGP looks great in FSAA", then the other gamer would say "Well it doesn't beat my frames in Quake 3 in the highest settings". It's really up to the user to choose which one is right for them. Reviews and Forums are to provide an insight, a look upon other people's ideas and feelings. Not to make you think like you HAVE to buy that one.. Though reading those NVIDIA Geforce2 Ultra videocard reviews, it makes me really want to go and grab one.
Well I hope you guys have a nice shopping spree....Aww you didn't have to buy me something.... (Please buy me a Geforce2 Ultra...) As for me, I'm off to nap nap land. Stardate 2.5444.5564.6466.9er, the crew of Starship Spam will go into the nebula of...Okay I need to be quiet and just end the review.. Bye bye!
