It's a great way to chat without having to have a browser, basically. This is how I met my husband. Sounds pretty pathetic doesn't it? It can be. I got "online" in 1993, on IRC (you can have IRC without mIRC) via unix then and started chatting. A few years later I downloaded this mIRC and started using it. One benefit is that you can control what you view and how you view so much better than with other programs.

The best thing is this is a free medium to talk to friends with. If you get free internet, download this, and chat with family and friends across the world, you're doing it for free. My family is large (12 aunts/uncles+ their spouses and 50+cousins and THEIR spouses, etc) and we live all over the place. This is a way for us to talk one on one without a phone, all together, at the same time!

Here are some down sides.. ADDICTION! I'm serious. People do not think about this, but it is a true fact of anything "online". It can be addicting. I know many relationships that have broken up over "online" affairs that may or may not be "in real life". My own husband had problems when I was pregnant with our son. I myself used to spend hours online doing this instead of going to classes when I first started college. Now, I don't do it as often.

Another advantage though, is how social it is. If you are a social person, it is a great way to meet all kinds of people. I have befriended and met people from all over the world, Sweden, Norway, England, Canada, etc. and all over the states. We used to have yearly get togethers. My husband I belong to an online "Indiana" chat room where most the people live in the Indiana/area. We have monthly get togethers, parties, birthday celebrations, etc.

Overall, this is a very easy to use program that once downloaded, does everything for you. It has options like "Notify" for those people you want to know are online as soon as they log into the server, "Ignore" for those people you don't, "Logging" for keeping those special chats close to your heart, and other things like file transfers,etc.
