| Diane-E's Full Review: Kodak PictureMaker Kiosk Printer |
I first started using the "Kodak PictureMaker Kiosk" about a year ago after my mother recommended it to me. I had a coupon for it, buy one get one free, so I decided to give it a shot. An aunt of mine had lent me some pictures of my grandparents and my father from when he was a little boy. She didn't have the negatives and the pictures were very old--some from the 1930s. I did not feel comfortable sending them away to be reproduced, so I tried this machine at my local drug store.
I was amazed at the quality of the pictures. I was able to adjust the color/tint and improve the quality of some washed out black and white photos. I was also able to enlarge and crop some of the images so that they were centered properly. I was very satisfied with how these B&W photos turned out.
My mother had some of her wedding photos and her mother's wedding photos copied for me using the Kodak PictureMaker. The color photos were enhanced, improving the color of the clothing in the photo. The original had actually faded. My mother felt that she was able to restore closely to the original colors. It is nice having photos of my family that I probably wouldn't otherwise have.
The PictureMaker is able to print a variety of sizes of photos, from 8 by 10 to wallet size. Borders can also be added to the pictures, although I have not used that feature. The paper is photo-quality. I'm not sure if it would meet archival quality--such as not fading after years, but time will tell.
The downside I see to the Kodak PictureMaker Kiosk is that it can be costly if you want to do a large amount of pictures. I believe a single sheet (with varying sizes or one 8 by 10) retails for $6.95. With a coupon, I saved a lot, but I haven't seen a half price coupon for a while. Also, one cannot copy photos that are copyright protected, such as professional photos. While it clearly states this on the machine, I decided to try to copy a proof from my wedding photos. (I know, it's illegal). It didn't work! No surprises there--professional photographers certainly are not going to let their business die because of a drug-store picture making machine!
Overall I would recommend the Kodak PictureMaker Kiosk to anyone who is interested in copying photos without negatives. It is relatively easy to use and I have found the store employees very helpful when needed. It is a great way to share old photos with the family.
