Railroads? Building railroads for hours and hours on end.....
I love sim games. I played with train sets as a kid and though that this might be a fun game. Wrong. In my opinion.
Some people really enjoy this game. They like managing railroads. They must be much more interested in trains than I am. I found this a very boring thing to manage. I really gave this game a shot. I tried out several games, changed some of the options for harder and easier gameplay. All I found was that the learning curve for the game was too steep to keep me interested and that building up a train industry just wasn't fun.
After playing many city-building sims: SimCity, Civilization games, Caesar III, and most recently Pharaoh I was used to the micromanaging. The choices here just got monotonous. What type of engine do I want? Where should I put the track? Which routes to carry what goods? Repair the train or not? Do I want a new station or a water tower? How do I manage investments?
I am not that excited by planning this sort of thing.
Bottom line: if you aren't really into trains, the train business and its history don't buy the game.
In support of Railroad Tycoon II, I thought that the graphics were fairly well done and the interface though confusing was very extensive and allowed for a lot of options.
