When searching for the perfect substitute for my office Dell desktop computer, I scoured the discount retailers in a vain attempt. Most of the offerings available didn't have the features that I require for mobile computing. That is, until I compared all of the units available dollar for dollar, feature for feature with the Dell Inspiron 7500 pentium 3 and 15" SXGA+ display screen.
I elected to go with the DVD drive option for future applications capabilities. Dell even threw in a free extra battery as a promotion with this particular model. You may want to opt for the office 2000 package, it offers more business software than you'll ever need.
The display screen is a wonder of modern technology considering that my desktop and the Inspiron share the same type ATI 8 MB video card and the Inspiron is much clearer and the viewing area is spectacular, i.e., for a laptop. After using the Inspiron for a short period of time at home, I soon found myself wiping off my Dell desktop screen at the office in order to try to get the screen a little clearer,(it didn't work).
The only perceived drawback when considering the entire package is the 10 lb. weight of the unit, not bad for the average guy to lug around but it could be a bit much for a petite lady. My advice is to purchase a heavy canvass Lands' End briefcase, the Inspiron fits in perfectly and so will the power cord, extra battery, etc.
My overall impression is that the Inspiron should satisfy any hardcore desktop user.
