| MoonBaybee's Full Review: Winbook XL 400i |
Hi all, this is my first review, and I hope this sounds all right. I ordered this from the winbook site, and since they were offering the 400 dollar rebate, I decided why not. I know that this computer wasn't that powerful, but mainly I wanted something to use while working in the library, or while sitting in the park. I thought it'd be nice to write with when I was away from my larger machine. Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with this machine.
I am no computer expert, I've just been computer for a few years, and nothing major, so I honestly wasn't expecting much. I got the computer and I popped in my office Word Perfect Office 200 disc. It slowly installed, to the point where I got up during the installation, got a drink and a magazine, sat back down, and it was still installing. I thought that it wouldn't be a problem, it being so slow, as it was basically a glorified word processor, but I was wrong.
When the program was finally installed, it took a very long time to open, I mean I clicked on the icon and it took a great deal of time to load. Also, more than once it froze on me if I used any of the utilities like spell check, and the grammar check. I saved the file every paragraph because I was sure it would eventually stop working. Essentially, 3 hours later I realized that this computer would be more of a headache than it was really worth, and after it froze while I was shutting it down for more than 35 minutes, I promptly shipped it back to WinBook. I found the AMD K-6 processor extremely slow, the ram too meager to even play hearts properly, and I am highly disappointed. Perhaps to some people, 700 dollars isn't a lot of money, but I expected a machine that at least performed some common tasks and it failed. The paltry 3 gig hard drive didn't help at all, and I sincerely don't recommend anyone other than a masochist buy this notebook.
Thanks for reading!
