| darsenault's Full Review: Handspring Visor Deluxe Handheld |
I've had a Visor Deluxe for months now - somehow I got lucky when I first ordered the device - it showed up in 3 weeks. From the moment out of the box this was the best PDA I've owned. It's a 100% PalmOS compatible device which means there are thousands of applications that you can download and install on the Visor. The Visor comes with and uses the Palm Desktop software. (Most excellent because the WinCE devices seem to force one to use MS Outlook. I'll save you from reading another review - I hate Outlook!)
The Visor comes packed with tons of memory (8 MB) so you don't have to worry about outgrowing the storage space too quickly. So what if you do need more memory, or want to go wireless, or want to play MP3s -- 2 words -- Springboard module. What a great idea! Mindspring has solved the expansion problem with a unique "Springboard slot" that accepts expansion cards (modules) that can contain just about any add-on you'd ever want/need. This slot protects your investment because it lets you add functions to the Visor rather than getting a new PDA every time technology advances to enable new applications. While there are not that many modules on the market today, they are in the works*. As of 3/8 the modem module was shipping. For more news on Springboard modules, see www.handspring.com/products/springboard_news.asp
* There is a cool module in the works from Innogear that contains a 56K modem, a cellular modem, a voice recorder, 2 alarms (vibrate/flash), and 8 more MB of ram. Innogear says it will sell for under $200 and be out in Summer 2000.
Other Visor features that I enjoy:
-- Style - Pick a color for your Visor
-- USB docking cradle gives you a super fast hotsync!
-- The calendar application supports floating appointments
-- Visor Deluxe comes with a leather case and a hard cover
OK to be fair I need to raise the "not so good" points, well actually only ONE aspect of the Visor is a problem. The backlight is the worst I've ever seen. A digital watch from a gumball machine has a better, more readable backlight. Simply stated - it's UNREADABLE! Mindspring - How did this feature escape your quality controls?
Overall opinion -- Love it!
