IBM Thinkpad 1472i: Speed Demon

Dec 21 '99

I purchased 3 of these notebook computers for my staff and there's only one word to describe them: Hot! Yes, they are.
At 366 mhz (Pentium II, not Celeron), superb multimedia capabilities, 2x DVD drive and a huge, brilliant 14 inches TFT screen, this is the best deal anyone could find.
For just US$ 2,400.00, this IBM creation is unbeatable. It's an all in one design weighting only about 7 pounds. This might be a little heavy for some people but having it all in one package might be more appealing to users. 64 MB RAM and 5 GB Hard disk are standard.
A v.90 56K modem is integrated, so you get two PC Card slots available for whatever else is needed (like networking or GPS devices). A USB port is also integrated; so all the new gadgets available can fit in as well.
Having a DVD drive makes this notebook a great entertainment center for the road (no need for those expensive portable dvd players), sound is crispy and image quality is near perfect. You can even listen to music cds while the computer is off (play controls are located on the front of the notebook and even have and lcd display).
Software that comes preloaded or along with this computer are: Windows 98 (Not Second Edition), Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, IBM World book Encyclopedia (not preloaded), lots of diagnostic and setup utilities (PC Doctor, Notebook Manager) plus many more.
IBM makes it easy to setup and customize the computer settings. A java program that runs on your desktop lets you customize anything with a very intuitive interface and another Java applet called IBM Connector lets you download driver and machine specific updates from IBM website.
One thing I did not like very much from this computer is the two handles located on both sides of the screen. They make it look a little weird. And I also found the bright and contrast controls to be almost useless. Looks like IBM is very sure that their auto brightness features would satisfy most users.
