I've tried many different notebooks, from Tecras, to Compaqs to Dells. I have to say the 7140 and its successor the 7200 are a good compromise overall in terms of weight and thinness. The main tradeoff is with battery life.
Overall, they have about the right set of what you need in terms of functions if you are mainly doing email. Personally I'm not a big watch a DVD movie on the airplane fan. I'm usually the power geek doing email.
What is really nice about the machines is durability. We also have a Sony machine and it has been in the shop (tough since you have to send it away and it take hours to get Sony tech support) on line.
Also, since it is so thin, it is super easy just to carry around.
I agree with the comment about battery life, it has a nice 13" screen, but it really uses up batteries.
