In October of 1999, my husband and I decided to take the plunge into the intriguing world of cyberspace. Now, we have had a computer in our home for a number of years....and have become somewhat of "experts" at playing tetris and card games....but now, we were ready for more!
Knowing virtually nothing about MB, Ram, Celeron or Pentium Processors....we chose an E-Machine 400MHz for our first internet capable computer. We relied mostly on the advice of Salespersons to make our decision. How were we to know that a 400MHz computer was already considered a dinosaur? Limited finances also played a part in our choice of what to buy. An office supply store near us was running a special deal, and E-Machines was offering a $75 rebate. Sounded good to us....so we bought it!
The problems started the very 1st day and haven't stopped since. Our daughter, who is quite computer savvy, set everything up for us and showed us the basics of how to get started....turn it on with this button, connect to the internet by clicking here, send E-mail like this! If you have any problems or questions, I'm just a phone call away. Boy, did we have problems.... Little did we know that we would get to know every tech support person at E-Machines on a 1st name basis!
For a few weeks, we thought the problems that we were experiencing might be because of our inexperience. Our daughter made us realize that computers are made for people to be able to learn....it was not normal for a computer to freeze, grind and lock-up for no reason at all! An occasional problem was to be expected....but not a different problem every few minutes. We were receiving numerous error messages, and were unable to run software of any kind without conflict. Our computer refused to allow us to download anything from the internet without a problem!
Trying to remedy this dilemma has been futile. We have had to completely restore our computer through DOS twice....we have added more RAM....and we have called E-Machines again...and again...and again! Although the above has helped somewhat, we continue to have problems.
Perhaps the computer that we purchased was a DUD....perhaps not! I guess we will never know! Clearly, our next computer will NOT be an E-Machine!
We finally received our $75 rebate last week....8 months after purchase and 6 months late!
At this time, I would not recommend an E-Machines computer to anyone.
