Makes ink jet color printers look black and white.

I use this printer for color only. It uses ribbons instead of the traditional ink jet printers which are plagued with problems. This produces the best color output for the money. It's not the fastest but if you need somewhat faster speeds buy the MD-5000 Alps. Since this uses ribbons you can do somewhat fancy things with this. From metallic film to clear coats. It's nice to have different colored ribbons so you only have to change the color that runs out. Now on this model if you want to have the clear coat in while doing color you need to use the multi-color ribbon. Which is fine but if you run out of just blue and not yellow and cyan you still have to buy a new multi-color. The MD-5000 however allows you to add more ribbons at a time to eliminate that issue. This printer however products bleed proof high resolution images. No more clogged ink jet cartridges or messy ink refills. However if your looking for a total solution in one printer I'd get a higher quality ink jet. Mainly because the black ribbon if you do much printing will run out fast and cost you more than the ink jets. But this printer and the MD-5000 are a perfect compliment to either a black and white inkjet or a laser. Even though you'll have two printers you'll actually have production quality for a fraction of the cost of an expensive laser color printer. If your mainly looking for black and white printing and the occasional color print. You may be better off getting a laser and using a friends color printer.
