I provided a review of a Dell computer 500 MHZ Celeron back in November, 1999. I praised the product and the service. I am still happy with the computer itself, but I have run into a major problem with the service.
Despite knowing that they did not have a local number to accommodate an internet hookup for me, Dell sold me their Dellnet Service. I was unaware that the phone numbers provided were all long distance. I just received a long distance phone bill which includes $400 of calls due to the Dellnet service. At first I thought it was my fault for choosing a wrong phone number. Then a Dell representative made a quick check and revealed that they did not have a local number to accommodate me. Dell had this information when I purchased the service over the phone, but the salesman failed to pass it on. Instead, he let me run up my long distance bill.
When I complained, Dell stated that they were not obligated to inform me of this problem, and were quick to point out their small print which states that I am responsible for all long distance charges associated with my service. I bought a Dell Computer because of the reputation of their service. I made a huge mistake.
