I have been hunting for a CD writer for some time now and have been watching reviews and especially looking over Epinions. There wasn't much available on this unit (I got a CED-8081B) but I'm familiar with LG's other products and they've made a good name for themselves. I have also used Adaptec software on other systems and I'm comfortable with that software.
When the time came to make a purchasing decision, I took what I had learned down to the store to compare prices. What I found amazed me. The LG was almost half the price of any of the other writers. That made the decision very easy.
Installing it was physically very easy. If you only have one CD-rom in your computer, chances are you have a data cable available to plug into your new drive. You will have to adjust one jumper setting on the back of the CD-RW drive to allow your computer to automatically determine the master/slave settings for your new drive. Don't try to do this yourself, you'll only get frustrated, and you'll probably set it up the way your computer would have defaulted it anyway. You will also need a power cable, which again you will probably have available in your computer. The drive comes with mounting screws.
Installing the software was difficult only because of a loose cable supplying power to my motherboard. That has nothing to do with the drive, just more complaints about my Compaq. Boy is Compaq lucky this model isn't listed at Epinions.
The software installation is a breeze. I recommend against installing the included DirectCD software. It's a pointless program when you know how to make a CD-RW, which you will learn very quickly.
The Easy CD Creator software is exactly what it says. You can drag-and-drop the desired files onto the CD to be created just like in Windows Explorer. A meter tells you when the number of files is approaching the maximum space available on your CD.
Overall, I am terribly impressed with this drive. I'd recommend it to anyone in the market for a CD writer, especially those on a budget.
