| c0mmander's Full Review: Creative Labs 3D Blaster Banshee |
Voodoo Banshee is an excellent 16 megabyte graphics card for $50. There are generic versions of this board which cost that much, or you can get it at an online auction for about that price (Egghead/Onslae, Ubid ect…) I’ve had my Banshee card since December 1998 and its been great for Quake 2, Kingpin, and the new Quake 3. If you are a serious gamer I recommend Nvidia’s geForce 256 (I plan to get that when the prices are lower). But if you are cash strapped but want reasonable gaming power, pick up a Banshee card for around $50. Also, I overclock my Banshee to 120 mhz core clock, and 110 memory clock for a few percent gain in frame per second. I put second heatsink on the backside and a fan on top of that. I also use the MiniGL drivers from Wicked3D.com which are recommended by PlanetQuake.com to improve performance by up to 50%.
Note: a major disadvantage to Banshee cards is that you CANNOT alt-tab out of GL games, so don't install it at work to play games, in case your boss strolls by you cubicle.
