I received my VA6 from a friend, on a trade for a Zip drive that I no longer used. I didn't realize how lucky I was to get a VA6, but was thrilled, as I began building my computer based around that board. The manual, although it uses broken English at times, is very thorough, easy to understand, and an excellent guide for a beginner like myself.
First off, the VA6 is available new for about $69--80--maybe $100! It can run with ANY Celeron, ANY Pentium 2, and ANY Pentium 3 processor! It supports FSB of 66mgz for the Celerons, and on up to 100 or 133 for the Pentium 2 and 3's.It includes onboard sound, which can be disabled, and a new sound card added, but it's nice to have, since the costs of purchasing all the parts one needs when putting together a system can nearly break you, its nice to know that a fancy sound card is not an absolute requirement when first powering up your VA6 system! The BIOS is by AWARD, and it's just about the easiest to work with BIOS that I have ever encountered! The manual, once again, explains LINE BY LINE, and PAGE BY PAGE of the BIOS, but it is already configured by default to run at optimal performance. The BIOS is able to detect hard drive size, processor speed, and other drives, but, in the event any part of it is incorrect, any of the before mentioned can easily be changed! You can even overclock your processor with the touch of a button! The VA6 has 5 PCI slots, and 2 ISA slots. Some of the newer boards available on the market have no ISA slots, because ISA is being "phased out". However, some of us still need an ISA slot; for instance, I use an ISA slot for a PCMCIA socket that is part of a "home networking" kit. I like having the options to be able to expand to whatever I need or want, and the VA6 allows just about all possibilities!
