I received my Dell 3700 for Christmas, and my life hasn't been the same since then. I had an old AST computer that was purchased in '94, I believe, with only one upgrade since then. It was slow and tempermental, and I was thrilled to see the Dell when it came.
It is so much faster than the old computer. It is a pentium 3 with microsoft '98. It does everything I tell it to do, and it looks pretty good. I checked out the Gateway (overpriced!!! and unattractive), Compaq Presario and IBM that compared with the Dell. The Dell was, I thought, more bang for the buck. I liked that there were 2 mouse options, a rubber point and touch screen. The size of the screen is also very nice.
But there are always problems. My parents bought it for me, and I never saw it before it arrived here. The main problem is that a person can either be using the CD-ROM or the 3.5 floppy drive, not both. They switch out, which can be a pain to deal with. But there is a lot of hard-drive space (a zip drive can also be attached) and a speedy modem that came in the form of a "gold card" - you know what I'm talking about.
Overall, I'm very happy with the Dell. I got Microsoft 2000 Small Business office with it, which came with Microsoft Publisher and lots of fun options. I also installed (later) Microsoft Powerpoint '97, which recently did very well in a presentation.
Overall, the Dell is the way to go, but the disk drives are something to think about.
