| eleen's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS T600 |
I purchased my customized Dell XPS T600R online (http://www.dell.com/html/us/segments/dhs/choose_dim_t.htm) and, with the exception of my own misconceptions about ship date, had a near-perfect experience.
Note to new buyers
I'd just quit my job and returned the laptop that had essentially been an extension of my body over the past 3.5 years, so when the realization hit me that I'd soon be without computer, I panicked. I spent a couple of days doing research on shopper.cnet.com, zdnet.com and shopping.hp.com and finally chose the Dell. I selected 3-day delivery (the cheapest FedEx option available) and, therefore, expected to receive my shiny new Dell in, well, 3 days. This logic didn't account for the fact that Dell systems are built to order, as Dell's online order tracking system so conveniently indicated, so...for other overzealous types out there, be warned.
A value buy
I ultimately chose the Dell over a comparable HP Pavilion for two reasons:
1. an included 3-year limited warranty (HP's was $500 at the time for an extended warranty! However, by this time the price, according to a warranty rep, should have gone down by about $150 or so.)
2. only $3 in sales tax! (I live in the Bay Area)
The promotion at the time also threw in a free Canon BJC-2010 printer, which was another plus, although I had to buy a printer cable for $25. Sidebar: you can actually get a great value from the HP Shopping Village on a refurbished HP Pavilion complete with printer, but it was the warranty and sales tax and the fact that I'd be getting a brand new computer that swayed me the other way.
Upgrades I chose:
1. 30GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
2. 19" M990 monitor
3. New 32MB NVIDIA TNT2...graphics card
4. 8x/4x/32x CD-RW Drive
5. SB LIVE! Value Digital w/ MusicMatch Jukebox
What I might have done differently (I'm big on lists tonite)
1. gone with the 17" monitor instead of the 19" because, although it looks really cool and is great for my eyes, the monitor alone takes up a good 20% of my desk surface
2. upgraded to the MS Internet Keyboard. I chose the "QuietKey" because, simply, I like quiet keys. Well, these keys ain't quiet.
3. reconsidered the DVD-ROM and subwoofer. I'm told the subwoofer is just amazing, especially with a DVD player. BUT, I was going for the money-saver, so...
4. MAYBE upgraded the speakers? but I'm not sure. My harmon/kardon's, which should be really good, emit a staticky sound for no apparent reason, even when the volume is low.
Other than that, customer service was great, the computer's great, and I'm one satisfied customer. I inquired about my order twice (once before the desktop came, and once before the printer arrived) and received a nice response within 12-24 hours.
