| Newskier's Full Review: Ricoh Internal CD-RW drive |
This Ricoh drive was purchased quite awhile ago, and only carries a 2x speed for writing, which is considerably slow by current standards. Nevertheless, it has proven extremely reliable, as I have used it for music CD's, data CD's and video CD's with nary an error. The drive cost a good 200 bucks back when I bought it new, but current technology allows you to get yourself a decent 8x recorder for a little bit more than that. If you're seriously strapped for cash, go out and check some auction sites such as ebay. People are always selling equipment on there, and you're bound to find something comporable, and for a great price too.
A nice feature of this drive is that it comes with Adaptec Easy CD Creator and CD Copier. These programs are simple to learn and use. Pretty much a drag and drop method for the CD Creator, which offers wizards to assist in CD creation. The Copier program is extremely simple. Just pop a CD you want to copy into your regular CD drive, and then put a recordable CD into your recorder and click to record, simple as that.
Most people will not need the Re-writable feature of the drive. Usually CD-Recordables are fine. They are a significanly cheaper medium than CD-RW. Plus, CD-RW discs don't always function on other CD drives. You can't use a CD-RW in a CD Player to play music, and a lot of regular CD drives are unable to read these, so you're better off going with a CD-R unless you deal with large amounts of changing data.
While the Ricoh drive has been reliable, I would recommend a drive from Plextor if you're looking for exceptional quality. If you'd like a good drive at a great price, check out the Creative Labs Blaster (model 8432 I believe) It has 4x/8x/32x speeds, making it a great all-purpose CD drive, and costs about $250 at the time of this review. Good luck and happy burning!
