When I first became interested in the Internet it was for one reason and one reason only, I wanted to chat. I tried many different chat rooms but could never find one that I really enjoyed. I ended up sticking with Excite because it was easy to access it from my email but after awhile I grew tired of it. There were just too many young kids there, chatting about stuff I had no interest in. In order to find a room geared mostly towards adults, I had to enter the "adult" rooms but I'm not one for cybersex, and it seems like that is all they want from you in those rooms
I gave up on chatting for awhile, and one of the people I met, looking only for honest conversation, told me to install Paltalk. He said he uses it often and you can filter out who you want to chat with and there are rooms set up for just about every interest. If I didn't find one I liked, I could start my own with my own rules and guidelines. I installed Paltalk and it became the only chat system I used, until I ended up spending all of my free time here at epinions.
When I first used Paltalk I was a bit overwhelmed. I was constantly getting messages and requests for video chats and phone calls. I couldn't talk with one person because someone was always interrupting me with an instant message. I emailed my friend and told him that Paltalk wasn't for me. It was too confusing for a beginner on the Net. He told me how to block messages from people on my pal list. That solved my problem. I could now focus my attention on one conversation without being interrupted.
The great thing about Paltalk is that the rooms give you the options of voice chat or manual chat. With some other systems I've tried, it's one or the other. With Paltalk you can listen to the conversations but can type your reply. It is convienent for those of us that are sometimes too shy to talk. Paltalk also has video chat which was new to me because I don't have a web cam and none of the other chat forums I've used even offer a video chat. It was nice to finally see the face of the person I had been chatting with for a little while. It also helps determine whether or not the person you are chatting with is for real.
Another plus of Paltalk is that if you aren't online and one of your pals are they can leave you a message that will automatically pop up when you log on. It also tells you who on your list is online and who is off-line. It prevented me from having to search through chat rooms looking for my friends.
I have since stopped using any chat room in order to focus all of my energy here at epinions but I didn't uninstall it from my computer. I will use it again but never again will I waste my time with any other chat program. Paltalk is the one for me!
