I have been using ICQ for over two years now. I will qualify my review by saying that aside from AOL's buddy chat/ Instant Message program, this is the only chat program I have used.
I live far away from my family and childhood friends, and had the long distance bills to prove it until I found this program. It allows me to maintain close communication with my relatives and friends in a way I honestly could not afford to do before. Although, again, I have the phone bills to prove that I TRIED.
The price is great (FREE!) for the features that ICQ offers. It is extremely easy to learn and use even for a beginner. I have cut my long distance phone bill to almost nothing just by using ICQ to talk with my friends and relatives back home.
I love the "real time" conversation feature...no more waiting for someone who is online to reply to an email. I can chat with several friends at a time in a private room and even make funny "honking noises" at them by pressing "CTRL G". (A girl has to have fun somehow!)
I have been disappointed recently with the number of times I was not able to connect to ICQ and problems with getting messages through. I am hoping that will improve. I also do not like the occasional solicitous messages I get inviting me to questionable websites. Luckily, ICQ has made it easy to block that individual and I have never gotten another message from a person I have put on my "blocked" list.
I love my ICQ and when I got my new computer, it was the first program I installed on it. A reminder along those lines: write down your friends' ICQ numbers from your contact list in addition to your own. Should you ever have to reinstall ICQ, it will save you a LOT of headache, trust me!
