| kiersten's Full Review: Railroad Tycoon 2 for Windows |
The first offering from PopTop Software is this truly fascinating strategy game. Nominally a remake of one of the pioneering computer strategy games—Sid Meier’s Railroad Tycoon—it expands the concept to include routing, hauling, playing the stock market, and creating monopolies. It’s the first game I’ve played that violates my “there has to be killing” rule, but still earns a five-star rating.
What’s so great about Railroad Tycoon II? It’s a tremendously well-thought out game. Historical simulations start at the beginning of the age of railroads, and continue on to the present day. The graphics are detailed without being cluttered or overwhelming, as are the ambient sound effects. Scenario goals are difficult without being impossible to achieve, and the game play is varied and interesting.
There’s not much to criticize here. The interface has a few too many screens, but it’s not bad given the amount of information being presented. And the multiplayer options are a bit strange, since players are essentially competing against themselves.
All in all, Railroad Tycoon II is an intriguing, educational, entertaining experience.
