The new mouse in town
Written: Apr 25 '00
Pros:wheel; 3rd, 4th, 5th buttons
Cons:$59!, styling
I bought this mouse after seeing an IntelliMouse w/IntelliEye at work. The MIS guy got one and I tried it. It was pretty cool how you could just move it along almost any textured surface without a mousepad and the mouse would track without fail. So I wanted one for myself (sucker for marketing) because I wanted a mouse for my laptop. I think the it was going for $40 street. So I figured I like the shape of the MS mouse so it was worth it.
Then when I was at Costco one night after work, I saw the "flagship" IntelliMouse Explorer for $59! I did a double take and I thought about it. Two extra buttons, USB with PS/2 adapter, optical pickup... So I figured I'd try it out. Everywhere else on the internet was like $75 which seemed pricey(not that $60 isn't).
I've had it for a good long time now, and I really like it. It really makes it hard to go from my mouse to another mouse. It's really easy to use the mouse to move around the screen/file/webpage using the extra buttons and the wheel without even thinking about it. It only takes a few minutes to learn. The difference is even more profound when you get to work and see that pitiful two button mouse on your desk.
Also, the mouse moves smoothly and flawlessly which is really the thing to look for. I like the feel of the buttons. I like how the wheel is textured for better grip.
I'm not a manual person, so I don't even know if it came with one--just kidding. I'm sure there was a manual. It comes with a CD for Windows and Mac. I plugged it into the USB port and fired up the CD. I put in my preferences for the mouse and I haven't touched the settings since.
I'm not really big on the "Futurama" style of the mouse. Nor am I a big fan of the red light on the bottom.
I was going to purchase the Microsoft Wheel Mouse (I've tried it at work) or the Logitech Mouseman Wheel (my cousin's) with USB, but I am really happy with this one.
This is really a personal preference thing so try before you buy.
