| isinga's Full Review: HP Pavilion 6540C |
It's been a long haul to get to this point, but... WOW! I started out with a Radio Shack computer running 370KB floppies. That led to a mailorder bargain 100mhz that could accomodate Windows 3.1 (stone age), then to a PB Synera that took me to 233mhz and Windows 95. I thought that was the cat's meow in comparison to the earlier iron I'd been working with. I mean, 233mhz -- dazzling speed! The only problem was I only had 32meg RAM, and 4gig hard drive. I soon discovered that even that kind of computing power (compared to UNIVAC and ENIAC) is fairly easy to overload and clog up with trash. When that happens, my dazzling speed vanishes and the computer freezes up. Nuts, rats, phooey, and all that kind of stuff!
Then, along comes HP's Pavilion 6540C, with (in my box) a 500mhz Celeron processor, 10gig hard drive, CDRW drive, a whooping good sound card and speakers (supports a sub-woofer and all that kind of stuff), and enough speed and capacity to allow me to run SETI at Home in the background while also running other programs -- without a noticeable loss of speed! Man, oh Man! Talk about pig heaven, this is it!
Now, for the more prosaic considerations. The system features a desktop that is tastefully attractive, with a discreetly contoured two-tone case that actually looks civilized! The system came with Win98 to contend with, but I've gotten used to that anyhow, so can't complain. It also came with the most butt-kicking keyboard I ever saw! It contains all the keyboard functions in a manner that turns every operation into a one-click joy! If I want to put the computer on standby, I just click the standby button! If I want to search for a document, no browser work, just click the document-find button. If I want to connect to the internet, I hit the connect button, and the computer does all the work in seconds. There are buttons for all of the various categories of internet sites, and I can specialize in my search with a single click on the appropriate genre of site. I fully control my CDRW/DVD from the keyboard, and the board even has a volume control knob so that I don't have to get into the computer to turn it up or down!
I've only had my new computer for two weeks, but I'm already completely spoiled by its ease and of operation. The only thing I'm still getting used to is shutting down. My old computer went through all the clickety-click and blinking, then opened a black screen with the message that it was all right to turn the computer off. My new HP doesn't mess around like that. When I go to the shut down mode, it (quickly) clears the temp files, shuts programs down, then TURNS ITSELF OFF!!! I simply love it!
For the price (I got it at U-Bid Auction for $567), I have to say it is the best buy I've ever made, and recommend it to you without any reservations at all. I'm running it in combination with my 17 inch Packard Bell monitor and my HP Office Jet 520, and giggle with joy every time I sit my fat tail down at my computer desk! If you happen to be looking for a new computer, check out U-Bid.com, and look for a HP Pavilion 6540C. You, too, can find yourself giggling every time you sit down at your computer -- and at a price you can afford! Good luck.
