Half-Life
This game definitely has what it takes to be a long-lasting game. I’m a habitual shoot-em-up gamer, and I’ve tried all the games I could get my hands on. From Duke Nuke’em, to Unreal, to Quake 3 Arena, nothing comes close to Half-Life for great game-play. All those other games are lots of fun, but they lack something. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great games, but Half-Life just kicks the hell out of them for one reason:
Half-Life has more realism.
I’ve played a very little bit of Half-Life by myself, but where it really shines is when you play multi-player games. I played many games before I came upon Half-Life. When I found it, my friends and I played it for the longest time afterwards. Eventually, some other game won out, and I forgot about Half-Life. One day, when my friends and I were sick and tired of all our other games, I realized that we still enjoyed Half-Life. So we booted it up and continued playing it. Soon we discovered the Team Fortress and Counter Strike mods, and we’ve been playing that for months. In the meantime, Quake 3 Arena came out, and I tried it out. I found that it’s just like all the other games, and we found it so boring that we never even started a head-to-head game with it. I’ve been playing Half-Life for the longest time, and I don’t know when I’m going to stop. It looks like it will be quite a while.
One thing Half-Life won’t amaze you with is the graphics. They aren’t outstanding. The good news is that the games runs smoothly on most computers. Overall, the graphics aren’t why you play the game anyway. They work perfectly for what the game is supposed to do.
Although the graphics are only okay, the sound is outstanding. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than most games I can think of. What makes the sound so good is that you can use the sound to help you play. You can hear people coming, and they can hear you. You can walk to be quiet, or you can run at the risk of being heard. Tin roofs make lots of noise, while grass is silent. This adds a whole new dimension that really makes things fun. As for realism, they went all-out on the sound.
I’d like to make one thing clear before I finish. My experience with Half-Life is mostly limited to playing it in multi-player mode. This means I play against other people. That’s quite different that when you play by yourself. Also, I spend a lot of time play with the Counterstrike and Team Fortress mods. This means you have to download the mods and configure them to work. That requires a little bit of know-how and some considerable downloading. This game is great for multi-player without the mods, but it’s even better with them. I’d like to remind you again, I never play games by myself, so I really don’t know how the single player Half-Life is. It looks like it might be great, but I don’t really know.
Anyway, if you’re looking for a game that is different from the others, you might want to consider Half-Life. All games get old and boring, but Half-Life will last for a long time.
