Being loyal to the instant messanger style of internet chatting, I was skeptical about jumping ship to get icq. Now I use both and it's the way to go. AOL instant messanger is the best for straight up chatting as ICQ's can be somewhat awkward. But the flip side of that is ICQ allows you to declare your status to other users, so they know when you are free to chat, Not available, and just don't want to be disturbed.
ICQ also allows you to leave messages for your friends who are not online. A very handy feature, that aol doesn't have, that is especially useful when you want to relay a message to someone who is a couple time zones away.
ICQ also has more options available. It allows you to send greeting cards, voice messages, web sights, and anything thing from your hard drive (i.e. programs, mp3s, etc) very easily. You can see more detailed profiles of other users and even set it up so it will inform you when your email account gets a new message.
ICQ does have many features that you won't use that take up a bunch of space on your hard drive, but it is a small price to pay for this quality service.
