Dell rolls out the red carpet
Feb 02 '00
I'll start out by saying that I am a huge fan of Dell computers. I have one, my family has one, my dad's company buys all of their computers from Dell, and many of my friends in my dorm have Dell computers and are happy with them.
The best thing about Dell is that they allow you to configure your own system, without ripping you off like other custom-made brands. Dells are business-caliber computers, the parts are usually well-made, and when they are not, Dell is more than helpful about replacing them. Whenever I have dealt with Dell, I have found them to be professional, respectful, friendly, and honest with me, the consumer. Whereas most computer companies are always trying to either confuse you or scam you into getting more than you really need (or scam you into believing you're getting more than you really are), I have never felt this with Dell.
One of my favorite aspects of the Dell company is their 24-hour tech support service. When my home computer was on the fritz, a customer service rep spent hours on the phone with my father trying to troubleshoot what eventually turned out to be our speakers screwing up a .dll file in the system menu. They were patient, helpful, and best of all, their support came free-of-charge.
Just the other day, my monitor broke, and, being away at school, I have limited means of replacing it. Because of their one-year warranty, Dell offered to replace my monitor free of charge, and even paid for the shipping, both of the new monitor and on the return of the old one. The technician I spoke to was friendly and helpful, and acknowledged my patience at dealing with the long maze of touch-tone questions before I even had a chance to complain (and I wasn't even going to, because it really was not that bad). I recieved the monitor two days later, hassle-free.
Dell really has their act together, and their strong position in the computer market reflects this. I would recommend considering Dell to anyone who wants to make a computer purchase and be treated with respect and care, even after the check has been cashed. I only wish that more people would realize that they can often get a better value by buying a made-to-order computer than the sketchy premade computers in various department and electronic stores.
