In eager anticipation I began to tear through the plastic wrap and pour through Final Fantasy VIII's instruction booklet. I had been waiting for this game ever since the day I finished Final Fantasy VII. When I popped it into the playstation I found that it was everything I had hoped it would be, but not. The game boasts great graphics, an excellent storyline, and reasonably fun gameplay; but there was something missing. I am a big fan of Squaresoft's work. Their track record is nearly untainted in my opinion. Anything that bears the Square logo is worth at least a look. Perhaps that is why I was slightly disappointed with VIII. I was expecting it to be better than other great Square games like Final Fantasy Tactics. If this came from any other game company than Square I would be astounded. It is a big improvement over VII and the CG's are beautifully rendered with fluid-like movement and dazzling graphics. The storyline is very good, but doesn't compare to that of FF Tactics. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Overall, it's a great RPG and definitely a must-have for any gameplayer, but it's not #1 on my list.
