| leesam's Full Review: Toshiba Portege 7020 |
I have been using my Portege for almost a year now, and I can honestly say that it is truly an amazing computer. The stability of the system is one of the best aspects of the computer. Toshiba really deserves credit for configuring a top-notch NT 4 system like this. Running Windows NT 4, it has crashed only *4* times in the past year (as in blue-screen-of-death-unrecoverable crashes). The screen is fairly large at 13.3" and relatively bright, even under the low-power setting. It is big enough to give presentations to small groups of people, and the easy access VGA connector takes care of larger groups. I have found the keyboard to be generally funcional, except for the pointer, whose eraser-head tips have be replaced pretty often. But then I have smaller hands, and I recommend that anyone who considers buying this computer to try another Toshiba portege keyboard (preferrably in the 7000 series) to see if it fits them right. This system is fast enough to run Unreal Torunament at an acceptable frame-rate with software redering. The computer is fast enough to run most everyday business apps like MS office pretty fast. The system works well with a 3Com CardBus PCMCIA 10/100 network card, although I had some difficulties getting the card working correctly upon installation (fixed after changing some BIOS settings). I don't have SystemSoft CardWizard installed like some of the other people who have made posts, and the CardBus card works just fine on this machine. I would reccommend a memory upgrade to anyone who buys this computer with NT 4 preinstalled, as NT 4 SP6a now takes up over 45MB alone on my system. I have mine upgraded to 192MB. It sounds like most of the people who are having trouble with this system are using it with the docking station, which I haven't purchased yet, so I can make no comment about their complaints. My biggest problem with this computer is the short life of the battery that comes with the computer. I normally get about 1.7 hours of battery life out of the computer under heavy use (playing Unreal Tournament). My Opinion: Anyone who can put up with the short battery life and the steep price should buy this computer.
