| archilab's Full Review: Acer TravelMate TM602TER |
After doing extensive research and even tried out the Sony xg series, I finally settled down on this little machine.
The reason? First of all, the money. Easily to see on the market, this is the best buy in terms of specs. You end up saving at least 500 dollars over other name brands with similar components.
Secondly, the chassis. The 602ter comes in a comfortable, and real portable size. A 13.3 inch display is not large but good enough for 1024 X 768. With the weight saver, it's extremely pleasant to take with you, even hold in your hands. The mag. alloy cover makes it feel really durable, at least for the cover. Could be better if the same strong material apply to the whole chassis.
Now come to the non-satisfying part:
First of all: the design.
If you are as picky as I do about details, this machine is definitely not the one you will be so proud to show off - as you will do with your Sony xg or z505 series. Plastic part and mag. alloy part do not have the best combination of colors. The front chrome panel for audio plug-ins looks odd, and unnecessary.
Second of all, performance.
The LCD panel is bright, but does not have enough contrast - as Sony vaio does. The less contrast leads to less perfect color representation - hard to achieve perfect neutral tone. But it's true, there's no dead pixels, at least on mine. The hard disk performance, which is probably common, is also slow.
Yet, in general, it's still the best buy on the market. You do get some compromise though - so do not expect the same artful design, craftsmanship, and precision from Sony. I would strongly recommended upgrade to win2k; it's great Acer shipped the units with all the necessary drivers on a CD.
